Introduction

Makalu Barun National Park is a place of outstanding natural beauty, recognised internationally for the diversity of its flora and fauna. It has the greatest elevation gain (8,000m) of any National Park on the planet, so nowhere else can offer the same biodiversity in so many ecological zones in such a short distance.   Due to its relative inaccessibility, this region is little-known to would-be trekkers heading to Nepal.  Therefore, you will see comparatively few trekkers, but you will undoubtedly be in the company of pilgrims, as the route as far as Yangle Kharka, goes to one of the sub-continent’s holiest Hindu Shrines.

Having enjoyed the trek through this diverse ecosystem, we have two full days in and around base camp.  This will let you explore the area to the full.  Alternatively, we can use one of the days as a spare in case we need more time to cope with contingencies such as the weather, river crossings or slow acclimatisation on the way in.
