Introduction

Due to its inaccessibility, the variety of landscape and the opportunity to experience ‘real Nepal’, many consider the Kangchenjunga Circuit to be the best trek in the entire Himalaya. There is only one downside: you need 4 weeks to do it. At the time of writing (October 2024) it is not possible to visit both the north and south base camps of Kangchenjunga in 3 weeks from Europe without following too quick an itinerary (meaning your acclimatisation is compromised). Due to road building, soon the Kangchenjunga Circuit will become a lodge-based trek, doable in less time and inevitably this will mean it becomes much more popular. If you want to experience the region before this happens, you should visit now!

At 8,586m, Kangchenjunga is the world’s third highest mountain, located in the far north eastern corner of Nepal, on the border with Sikkim. This is a tough trek, venturing deep into the heart of the Himalaya and passing through mountain villages that have changed little since Douglas Freshfield came here in 1899 on his expedition that circumnavigated the massif. This trek visits both the north and south base camps and crosses the Mirgin La (4,550m) to the south west of Kangchenjunga.

Dhaulagiri Circuit

Nepal

20 Days

A trek that thinks it’s an expedition, the Dhaulagiri Circuit is one of the toughest and most spectacular in Nepal. The route contours around the base of the world’s seventh highest mountain, visiting its base camp and continuing to a remote, high-altitude valley, which is inaccessible unless you are equipped to cross mountain passes above 5,000m.
